El Papa:
La caridad es un amor casi ‘imposible’ que nos hace amar incluso a los enemigos
En la audiencia general, el Papa Francisco estableció una distinción
entre el amor cristiano y todos los demás tipos de amor que se experimentan en
la vida: el que nace del Evangelio «bendice a los que maldicen», tan
«audaz que parece casi imposible».
«Quedan, pues, estas tres cosas: la fe, la esperanza y la caridad.
Pero la mayor de todas es la caridad»: escribe San Pablo en la Primera
Carta a los Corintios. La caridad, tercera virtud teologal, es el tema de la
catequesis del Papa Francisco hoy en la audiencia general en la Plaza de San
Pedro.
“El amor es paciente, es servicial; el amor no es envidioso, no hace
alarde, no se envanece, no procede con bajeza, no busca su propio interés, no
se irrita, no tienen en cuenta el mal recibido, no se alegra de la injusticia,
sino que se regocija con la verdad. El amor todo lo disculpa, todo lo cree,
todo lo espera, todo lo soporta. (1 Cor 13,4-7)”
Se habla mucho del amor, pero
¿qué es el amor?
San Pablo se dirige a una comunidad cristiana que vive contrastes y
disputas, «hay quienes pretenden -dice- tener siempre razón y no escuchan
a los demás, considerándolos inferiores». Incluso durante la celebración
de la Eucaristía hay divisiones, continúa el Papa, «y hay quien aprovecha
para comer y beber, excluyendo a los que no tienen nada».
Probablemente todos estaban convencidos de que eran buenas personas, y
si se les preguntaba por el amor, responderían que el amor era ciertamente un
valor muy importante para ellos, al igual que la amistad y la familia. Incluso
hoy en día, el amor está en boca de todos; está en boca de tantos
«influencers» y en los estribillos de tantas canciones. Hablamos
mucho de amor, pero ¿qué es el amor?
El amor de Dios es el que no
quita, sino que da
El temor del apóstol es que entre los cristianos de Corinto «no hay
rastro» de la virtud de la caridad, la que viene de Dios, y que del amor
de Dios saben poco. Porque el de Dios «no es el amor que sube sino el que
baja, no el que toma sino el que da». Ágape era el término utilizado para
designar el amor cristiano, distinto de todos los demás amores, como el
enamoramiento o el amor a la patria o el amor a la humanidad. Es «un amor
más grande», dice el Papa, «un amor que viene de Dios y se dirige a
Dios», y que al mismo tiempo nos hace capaces de «amar al prójimo
como Dios lo ama».
«Este amor, por Cristo, nos empuja donde humanamente no
llegaríamos: es amor por los pobres, por lo que no es amable, por los que no
nos quieren y no nos agradecen. Es amor por lo que nadie amaría. Incluso por el
enemigo. Esto es «teológico», esto viene de Dios, esto es obra del
Espíritu Santo en nosotros».
Un amor que incluye al enemigo
En el Sermón de la Montaña, Jesús describe este amor mostrando su
diferencia con el amor del que son capaces incluso los pecadores: “Si aman a
los que los aman, ¿qué mérito tienen? También los pecadores aman a los que los
aman. Y si hacen bien solo a los que les hacen bien, ¿qué mérito tienen?
También los pecadores hacen lo mismo” (Lc 6,32-33). Por tanto, el cristiano
debe amar a todos, sin esperar reciprocidad y sin interés, y su amor debe
incluir a sus enemigos. Recordemos estas palabras, subraya el Papa: «Amen,
en cambio, a sus enemigos, hagan el bien y presten sin esperar nada».
«El amor cristiano abraza a los que no son amables, ofrece el
perdón -¡qué difícil es perdonar: cuánto amor se necesita para perdonar! El
amor cristiano bendice a los que maldicen, y estamos acostumbrados, ante un
insulto o una maldición, a responder con otro insulto, con otra maldición. Es
un amor tan audaz que parece casi imposible, y sin embargo es lo único que
quedará de nosotros».
El juicio final será sobre la
caridad
«El amor es la ‘puerta estrecha’ por la que debemos pasar para
entrar en el Reino de Dios», afirma además Francisco. En el ocaso de la
vida seremos juzgados precisamente por este amor, es decir, por la caridad. En
el ocaso de la vida escucharemos de nuevo las palabras de Jesús: «En
verdad les digo que cuanto hicieron a uno de estos hermanos míos más pequeños,
a mí me lo hicieron».
